Glyn Philpot

Glyn Warren Philpot ( born October 5, 1884 in Clapham, † December 16, 1937 in London) was an English painter.

Life

Philpot was born in 1884 as the fourth child of John and Jessie Carpenter Philpot Philpot. After his mother died seven years later, his father married their half-sister, Julia. At the age of 15 years Philpot went to the Lambeth School of Art Since 1904 he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London from his pictures. He entered Paris at the Roman Catholic faith and worked more often in Spain. Philpot served in the First World War in the British infantry, but was dismissed in 1917 on grounds of invalidity. He portrayed the British Admiralty. In 1921 he painted portrait commissions in the United States. later in Italy and Egypt. In 1927 he became curator of the Tate Gallery. He was elected President of the Guild of Catholic artist and painted a series of paintings with religious themes. At the Venice Biennale in 1930 he had a solo exhibition. In 1931 he went to Berlin, where his pictures with homosexual content irritations provoked. Later he went to Spain and Morocco. He died at the age of 53 in London of a heart attack and was buried in Petersham.
