Gochsheim Castle

The Graf Eberstein Castle in the district Gochscheim the city Kraichtal in the district of Karlsruhe in the northwest of Baden-Württemberg goes back to a medieval castle, and was one of the headquarters of the Counts of Eberstein. The only partly preserved plant since the 19th century belonged to the community and is today partly a museum.

History

The castle is located on the site of an earlier castle on a hill above the west Kraichbachs. To the medieval castle of 1278 for the first time as oppidum ( town ) designated place Gochscheim was early developed. The castle was under varying upper feudal lords owned by the Counts of Eberstein, which from 1520 could rebuild the castle. Until 1580, a facility was built in the Renaissance style from the small Middle Castle and the larger rear lock. Following the castle (on the site of the present school) was once the stately wine.

After the early death of Casimir von Eberstein in 1660, which left no male descendants, the Ebersteinsche possession came over his daughter Albertina Sophie ester ( † 1728), who was married to Friedrich August von Württemberg- New City († 1716), in Württemberg.

With the devastation of the city in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689 by the French, as well as a town fire in 1739 the castle was damaged respectively. 1828/29 the larger rear lock was broken, the remaining Front castle came into the possession of the city, and was occasionally used as a school and rebuilt after the construction of a new school in 1905 in its present form.

Among the preserved original parts of the castle from its emergence in the 16th century include the stair tower, the main entrance and a stucco ceiling in the tower room. The building in the castle courtyard is a former farm buildings and previously housed the stables and carriage - shed, which is probably the only surviving remains of the medieval castle because of the visible on the south side hump cuboid.

Current usage
