Gol Transportes Aéreos is a Brazilian low-cost airline based in São Paulo and bases at the airports of Congonhas and Rio de Janeiro -Santos Dumont.

History

Gol was founded in 2000 and took off on 15 January 2001. First, it belonged to the Brazilian company Grupo Aurea, which is owned by the Constantino de Oliveira family. This family came Gol on the Forbes list of billionaires. Constantino de Oliveira Júnior running the company in 2007 acquired the former airline Varig and in 2011, the airline Webjet and became a market leader in the domestic passenger transport in Brazil.

On 24 June 2004, the airline went with a sale offer on the stock exchanges of São Paulo and New York. Now belongs AeroPar Participacoes ( 77%), Venture ( 17.6 %) and American International Group ( 5.4%).

In April 2007, Gol bought the venerable but ailing state carrier VARIG. Both airlines have been but are operated as independent branches with well-defined business models continues: While Gol focused on the low- cost sector, the VARIG brand was used mainly for international stretch (Long) until August 31, 2008. Incident

A Boeing 737-800 - - September 29, 2006 Gol Transportes - - Aéreos Flight 1907 crashed with 154 passengers on the flight from Manaus to Brasília over the Amazon region from. In the accident, there were no survivors, so this accident was the second worst air disaster in Brazilian history. The aircraft was put into service, according to GOL only on 12 September 2006 and had completed only 200 flight hours. The cause of the accident was a collision with a twin-jet Embraer Legacy 600 on an opposite course, the seven crew members and passengers were without prejudice to an emergency landing on a military airfield. The Embraer suffered doing damage to a winglet and on the elevator. Cause of the accident was that the Embraer flew on an incorrect amount and also their transponder was turned off, thus also the collision warning system did not work. This situation was the result of a whole series of errors mainly of air traffic controllers as well as the crew of the Embraer.
