Gonçalo M. Tavares

Gonçalo Manuel Tavares (born in 1970 in Luanda, Angola ) is a Portuguese writer who has worked as a novelist, playwright, poet and essayist, and one of the most important Portuguese writers of his generation since its debut in 2001.

Life

Gonçalo M. Tavares was in Luanda, Angola (then a Portuguese colony ), born in 1970 as the son of a construction worker. He spent his childhood in Aveiro, before he moved to Lisbon at age 18.

He is Professor of Philosophy with a focus on epistemology at the Technical University of Lisbon.

Gonçalo M. Tavares had his literary debut in 2001 with the poetry collection Livro de Dança, since then he has published more than 30 books that include various genres, as poetry, drama, novel, short story, children's books, essays.

Tavares has divided its literature in series, of which " O Bairro " ( The district ) and the novel tetralogy " O Reino " ( The kingdom ) are the best known. " O Bairro " peopled successively with well-known personalities from the history of literature ( Bertolt Brecht, Paul Valéry, Italo Calvino, Roberto Juarroz, Karl Kraus, Robert Walser, André Breton, TS Eliot, Emanuel Swedenborg ), which he paraphrased in volumes of short prose.

Many of his books have been translated into numerous languages. In German language, his novel are so far the invalids ( Original title: Jerusalém ) in 2012 at the DVA and the short prose water, dog, horse, head ( original title: Água, cão, cavalo, cabeça ) published in 2008 in publishing the apple.

Awards

Tavares ' work has been honored with numerous awards at home and abroad, including with the Prémio Telecom de Literatura em Língua Portuguesa (Brazil), the price of the Portuguese Writers' Association Associação Portuguesa de Escritores (APE ), the Prémio Branquinho da Fonseca, the Prémio Lex / Millennium BCP, the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger 2010 and the Prix Littéraire Européen 2011.

His most significant price so far, however, was the Prémio José Saramago, who was awarded to him in 2005. In the eulogy José Saramago said, the now legendary in Portugal now phrases: " Gonçalo M. Tavares has no right to write at the age of 35 years as well. One would like to beat him. " This praise of the Nobel laureate explains why Tavares is treated as a worthy successor of Saramago and Antonio Lobo Antunes.

The French newspaper Le Figaro described him as " Portuguese Kafka". Great authors -reviewed his works, so Eduardo Lourenço, Alberto Manguel and Moacyr Scliar.
