Gonium

1.Chlamydomonas - similar cell 2 jelly

Gonium is occurring in freshwater green algae species from the class of Chlorophyceae.

Description

Gonium is plate-shaped, rectangular cell colonies 4-16 cells. These colonies arise by division of a mother cell, the daughter cells form loose connections by a new colony. Each cell of these colonies is also individually viable and separated from the original colony, divide and re- form a new colony. Each cell is like Chlamydomonas, a unicellular algae. Since the cells lie together on a plate of jelly, a substance exchange between them is possible. The individual cells are not differentiated, but are capable of common services, such as swimming in one direction. Gonium occurs in ponds, swamps and puddles. This cell feeds autotrophic. ( Nutrition for all plants)!

Gonium pectorale, the mosaic - green algae comes in warmer seasons often in slightly eutrophic ponds.

Types of Gonium also be used for the classification of water quality according to the saprobic system. In heavily polluted waters of grade III ( α - mesosaproben ) observed mass developments of Gonium.
