Gopal Swarup Pathak

Gopal Swarup Pathak ( born February 24, 1896 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh; † 31 August 1982) was an Indian lawyer and politician and from 1969 to 1974 fourth Vice-President of India.

Biography

Pathak studied post-school law at the University of Allahabad, was then as a lawyer and then a judge. Most recently, he was a judge at the 1945 High Court of Allahabad ( Allahabad High Court ).

After the sovereignty of India on 15th August 1947 at the same time he began a political career and was 1960-1966 Member of the Upper House ( Rajya Sabha ). In addition, he was also Chancellor of the University of Mysore, Bangalore University and the Karnataka University.

After working for a year as Minister of Justice in the government of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi 1966-1967 he was on May 13, 1967 to May 30, 1969 Governor of the State of Karnataka.

Subsequently, he was elected Vice- President of India and during his tenure from August 31 1969 to August 30, 1974 so that at the same time President of the Upper House. He was brought forward by Prime Minister Gandhi the then Acting President of the Upper House Violet Alva, who then resigned from this office.

Raghunandan Swarup Pathak His son was also a lawyer and between 1986 and 1989 President of the Supreme Court.
