Göran Malmqvist

Nils Göran David Malmqvist ( pronunciation: [ ˌ ʝœ ː ː ɹan times mkvist ], born June 6, 1924 in Jönköping ) is a Swedish linguist, historian, sinologist, translator and member since 1985 Svenska academies.

Life

Malmqvist studied at the University of Stockholm in Bernhard Karlgren Sinology. After three years of study in China ( 1948-1950 ) he put 1951 in Stockholm, the licentiate. From 1953 to 1955 he was a lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of London, then he was a Swedish cultural attaché in Beijing. In 1958 he was a lecturer at the Australian National University in Canberra, where he was in 1961 appointed professor. Followed in 1965 Malmqvist a reputation Stockholm University professor of Chinese language and culture.

Malmqvist published fundamental studies on Chinese grammar, phonology, historical linguistics and language typology.
