Gordon Bajnai

György Gordon Bajnai ( born March 5, 1968 in Szeged ) is a Hungarian politician and was on April 14, 2009 to May 29, 2010 Prime Minister of Hungary. Until his election as Prime Minister, he was Minister for National Development and Economy. Bajnai was elected by a vote of no confidence against his predecessor, the Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, by the Parliament in this office.

Life

In the last years before the political " revolution" in 1989 Bajnai was a member of the Socialist Youth League of the People's Republic of Hungary, had there but no leadership position held. He studied from 1991 International Relations at the Budapest University of Economic Studies (now Corvinus University of Budapest ). In the same year he took up a post for the first time in the private sector ( financial group creditum ). Until 2006 he remained continuously in the private sector operates, especially when several financial groups. In 2003 he was selected by the Confederation of Industrialists Hungary to the "Young Manager of the Year ". Bajnai is married and has two children.

Political career

Only in 2006, he took over for the first time a political function when he Prime Minister Gyurcsány ( whom he had met in the Communist Youth League KISZ ) was appointed government commissioner for development policy of the National Development Agency. Only a year later he was appointed as Minister of Local Self-Government and Regional Development to the Cabinet. In 2008 he moved to the Ministry of National Development and Economy. On 29 March 2009 he was nominated by Prime Minister Gyurcsány himself as the new head of government. Gyurcsány had recently announced his resignation due to lacking support in the population and explained that he wanted to be an economic expert by means of a constructive vote of no confidence to choose his successor. Bajnai took the nomination and announced immediately afterwards an even tougher reforms to, the painful cuts for would bring " every Hungary " with it, but was inevitable.

Controversies

2000-2005 Bajnai was chairman of the conglomerate Wallis Rt ( AG). For his actions and decisions in this position he is today strongly criticized. Following the acquisition and subsequent processing of the poultry processing plant Hajdú- Bét Rt by Rt Wallis Bajnai said to have not done enough to prevent bankruptcy. The now bankrupt firm has outstanding debt of 5.5 billion forint at suppliers today. Therefore, numerous family businesses that have been supplying the Hajdú - Bét with poultry, fall into strong financial and existential difficulties. In the course of bankruptcy committed nine farmers suicide. Also critical is seen that both the acquisition of Hajdú- Bét by Wallis and the bankruptcy Cypriot offshore companies were involved. Bajnai has not been prosecuted and stressed that there was no legal violations.
