Gordon Delamont

Gordon Arthur Delamont ( born October 27, 1918 in Moose Jaw, † January 16, 1981 in Toronto ) was a Canadian trumpeter, composer and music educator.

Delamont, taking lessons from his father, the trumpeter Arthur Delamont. From 1939 he was in Toronto lead trumpet in various dance and radio orchestras. From 1945 to 1949 he appeared with its own dance orchestra. In the summer of 1949, he took courses in composition, arrangement and music education at Maury German in New York, after which he opened an own in Toronto and taught privately harmony, counterpoint, composition and music theory. Among his pupils were in the course of thirty years, among other things Peter Appleyard, Saul Chapman, Gustav Ciamaga, Ron Collier, Jimmy Dale, John Dobson, David Elliott, Jack Feyer, Doug Foskett, Bill Goddard, Hagood Hardy, Herbie Helbig, Paul Hoffert, Lawrence House, Don Johnson, Eddie Karam, Moe Koffman, Rob McConnell, Ben McPeek, Marek Norman, Lloyd Orchard, Bernie Piltch, Mort Ross, Fred Stone, John Swan, Norman Symonds and Rick Wilkins.

From 1953 to 1962 Delamont conducted a sample band with which he performed compositions of his students, he also initiated in the 1960s, a jazz octet, with which he, inter alia, occurred in the Ten Centuries Concerts. As a composer, he was one of the leaders of the Third Stream in Canada. His textbooks are used internationally in teaching at music schools and universities.
