Gordon Slynn, Baron Slynn of Hadley

Gordon Slynn, Baron Slynn of Hadley GBE, PC, QC ( born February 17, 1930; † 7 April 2009) was a British judge.

Life and career

Slynn was born on 17 February 1930, the son of John and Edith Slynn. He attended Sandbach School, Goldsmiths, University of London, and Trinity College ( Cambridge ). In 1956 he was admitted to the Bar of Gray 's Inn in 1970 and Senior Member ( Bencher ) and 1988 Treasurer.

Slynn served as a lawyer in the Ministry of Labour 1967-1968, and as First Junior Treasury Counsel ( Common Law ) By 1968 until 1974. He was Attorney-General in 1974. Then, the newly created Office of General Counsel, he was transferred to the Treasury ( Treasury ). This office he held until 1976. 1978 he became President of the Employment Appeal Tribunal. 1981-1988 he worked as Advocate General at the European Court of Justice. From 1988 to 1992 he was a judge at the European Court of Justice. Slynn was from 1992 to 2002, Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. On March 11, 1992, he was at the same time life peer as Baron Slynn of Hadley, of Eggington in the County of Bedfordshire. In the House of Lords he was sitting as Cross Bencher. Between 1992 and 2005 he participated several times in discussions. As a Lord of Appeal he resigned in 2002 for health reasons, three years earlier than necessary. Slynn died on 7 April 2009 at the age of 79 years to cancer.

Honors

In 1976 he became a Knight Bachelor. From 1978 to 2008 he was Chief Steward of Hereford, and it was 1996, the Freedom of the City award awarded. In 1992, he served as President of the Bentham Club and in 1993 as President of the Holdsworth Club. He conducted a visitation from 1995 to 2002 at Mansfield College, University of Oxford, and from 1995 to 2000 at the University of Essex. Slynn was admitted to the Order of Saint John in 1998. He was honored in 2009 with the Order of the British Empire. Slynn was also honorary president of the Durham Mooting Society and honorary member of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society at the University of Virginia.

He was married to Odile Marie Henriette Boutin since 1962.
