Gorgol Region

Gorgol (Arabic ولاية كركول, DMG Wilaya Kurkul ) is the fifth administrative region in Mauritania. It lies in the south of the country and extends only over a small area.

The capital is Kaédi; also in the region are the cities M'Bout and Maghama. Gorgol divided into four departments M'Bout, Kaédi, Maghama and Monguel.

Within Mauritania Gorgol is the administrative regions Brakna in the west, the east and Assaba Guidimaka adjacent to the southeast. Southwest borders Gorgol to Senegal, the limit being set by the Senegal River.

At the 2000 census Gorgol had 242 711 inhabitants.
