Gorgonius

Gorgonius of Rome († 305 in Rome ) is an early Christian martyr. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. His feast day is on September 9.

About the life of St.. Gorgonius is hardly found something, but it seems certain that he was martyred in the persecution of Christians under Diocletian in Rome. Tradition holds that Gorgonius was buried in an early Christian cemetery on the Roman Via Labicana, but this Coemeterium has not yet been discovered. Even in a martyrology from the year 354 finds recorded him. In the 8th century came the relics of St. Gorgonius to Lorraine in the local abbey Gorze the Benedictines, some time later to Minden in Westphalia. The hl. Gorgonius is the patron saint of the Minden cathedral.

Iconography

The hl. Gorgonius is shown in knightly armor, shield and sword are assigned to him as attributes.

Folklore

The feast of Saints is one of the so-called Lost Agen. There are therefore several proverbs:

  • Bring Saint Gorgon rain, followed by a fall with little blessings.
  • Raining ' s in Santa Gorgon, the harvest is forlorn.
  • St. Gorgon drives the larks it.
  • Is it in Santa Gorgon beautiful, you will see beautiful forty days.
