The Gornergrat is a ridge at an altitude of 3'135 m above sea level. M. It is located about three kilometers east of Zermatt in the Swiss canton of Valais. The Gornergrat is located between the Gorner Glacier and the Findel Glacier and offers a view of more than 20 four-thousanders, including the Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn and the Lyskamm.

It represents the last stop of the Gornergrat Railway opened in 1898, which leads over Riffelalp and Riffelberg, overcoming a difference in altitude of almost 1500 meters. At the terminus ( 3,089 m above sea level. M. ) on the southwestern tip of the ridge is a mountain hotel. With a new gondola that runs from Furi from Riffelberg, the Gornergrat ski area is connected to the Klein Matterhorn ski area. From Gornergrat Zermatt the stock horn with a cableway was 1958-2007 reached that crossed the Hohtälli.

Research Station

On the two towers of the mountain hotels are located since the late 1960s, two observatories HFSJG ( High Altitude Research Station Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat ). The Observatory Gornergrat North was home to 2005, a 1.5 -meter infrared telescope ( Tirgo ), the Observatory Gornergrat South and mid-2010, a 3-meter radio telescope ( KOSMA ). Currently, both domes are no longer used for scientific purposes. In addition, the University of Bern operates a laboratory container to measure solar neutrons, which is the European cornerstone of a worldwide network of such stations.
