Gorodovikovsk

Gorodwikowsk (Russian Городовиковск until 1971 Baschanta / Башанта; Kalmyk Башнта, Baschnta ) is a small town and raion center with 9565 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Autonomous Republic of Kalmykia of the Russian Federation.

Location

Gorodowikowsk is the Manytsch lowlands in the far west of Kalmykia, near the borders of Rostov Oblast and Stavropol Krai. The distance to the eastern Republic capital Elista is about 240 km, the closest city is Salsk in Rostov Oblast, some 60 km north- west of Gorodowikowsk.

History

The village was (Mongolian beischin "House" ) was founded by the Kalmyks in 1872 under the name Baschanta. In 1909, the village center of Kalmyk Ulus ( ≈ county ), 1938, now part of the Kalmyk ASSR, an urban-type settlement. The renaming in Gorodowikowsk in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union, Oka Gorodowikow Ivanovich (1879-1960), and the simultaneous granting of town rights were in 1971.

Gorodowikowsk is relatively low in industry; this is limited there largely on food and industrial use. In Rajon Gordowikowsk is otherwise primarily agricultural.
