Gottfried Baist

Baist Gottfried ( born February 28, 1853 in Ulfa ( Nidda ); † October 22, 1920 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German linguist and Hispanist. His father was the pastor Gustav Baist; his uncle was a chemist and entrepreneur Ludwig Baist.

Life and work

Baist studied Romance languages ​​, history and German literature in Gießen and at Conrad Hofmann in Munich. He received his Ph.D. in 1880 in Erlangen with Karl Vollmöller hispanistisch with age and text tradition of Don Juan Manuel ( Halle aS 1880) writings, was there from 1884 Assessor at the library and habilitated in 1889 with Hermann Varnhagen on The Arab aspirates and gutturals in Spanish (Erlangen 1889 ). He was from 1891 to 1918 as the successor to Fritz Neumann Professor of Romance Philology in Freiburg. In office year 1909/10 he was there also rector.
