Gotthold Salomon

Gotthold Salomon ( born 1 November 1784 in Sandersleben (Anhalt), † November 17, 1862 in Hamburg ) was a German rabbi and preacher, educator, politician and Bible translator.

Life

Solomon was a pupil of Joseph Wolf in Dessau. In 1802 he became a teacher at the " Franz School of Hebrew and German language," at the David Frankel taught. From 1806 he was editor of the periodical Sulamith. In 1818 he became a preacher at the Hamburg Temple ( Reform synagogue in the Old Steinweg ), where he held the sermons in German language. His reforms led to the Hamburg Temple controversy.

Solomon dealt with the sermons of contemporary Christian preacher, which his own exposition way influenced. As one of the most eloquent Jewish preacher of the 19th century he lectured in London, Frankfurt, Vienna and Prague, participated in the 1840s Rabbi conferences in Brunswick, Breslau, Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig. He fought for the emancipation of the Jews and wrote a polemic against Bruno Bauer.

In 1837 he was the first Jewish translation of the Bible into German writing out the German people and school Bible for Israelites, where it benefited from the cooperation of Isaac Noah Mannheimer and financial support of Salomon Heine.

Salomon opened in 1844 the New Israelite Temple in Pool Street, where he was active until 1858. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge to the rising dawn in Frankfurt and honorary member of the lodge to silver unicorn in Nienburg.

1848 Salomon was elected in Hamburg as a member of the Liberal election Association in the Constituent Assembly ( "Hamburger Constituent Assembly ").
