Govert Flinck

Govert (also Govaert ) Flinck (* January 25, 1615 in Kleve, † February 2nd 1660 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch genre, historical and portrait painter and draftsman.

Biography

In 1629 Flinck received his first lessons from Lambert Jacobsz. in Leeuwarden. To 1632 he went to Amsterdam, where he remained until 1635 drawing and painting lessons at Rembrandt van Rijn received and worked for Hendrick van Uylenburgh. Whose style he acquired strong, so that his pictures are all pupils of Rembrandt, with the exception of Eeckhout, where the Master is most similar. He then began his independent work.

Flinck was as far back as a highly respected artist. His portraits found in the Amsterdam high bourgeoisie and the royal court high recognition. The Elector Frederick William of Brandenburg and the Prince Maurice of Nassau left many pictures, preferably portraits painted by him. In 1652 he received the right of citizenship in Amsterdam.

He painted histories: Isaac blesses Jacob (1638, in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam ); Abraham, Hagar repudiating (in Berlin ); the angel to the shepherds announcing the birth of Christ ( in the Louvre at Paris, and others), also genre paintings, such as the guard-room ( in Munich); but its main activity is extended to the portraiture.

Age of 22, he made herein admirable, as the portrait of a young man in the Hermitage of St. Petersburg proves. Govert Flinck enjoyed the friendship of the brothers Cornelis and Andries de Graeff and the Six family. Under the reign of the De Graeff family Flinck was honored with many public contracts and honor, so he created some biblical scenes for the Amsterdam town house Paleis op de Dam. Furthermore Flink received by the House of Orange and of Margrave Frederick William of Brandenburg Portrait orders.

Stylistically, his paintings resemble very first which Rembrandt, as well as show the photos above. How Rembrandt was Flinck also a passionate collector of plaster casts of ancient sculptures, paintings, drawings and engravings, for which were released after his death, against 12,000 guilders. His son Nicolaes Flinck Anthoni possessed a rich collection, which passed after his death to the Duke of Devonshire.
