Goygol is a city in Azerbaijan. It is the capital of the district Goygol. The city has about 19,000 inhabitants in 2008 and was first established as Helenendorf. Later it was called Xanlar, Russian Chanlar.

History

The city was founded in 1819 by German settlers under Tsar Alexander I and was called Helen village. The city became one of the most important colonies of the Caucasus Germans who still posed a significant majority of the population in Helenendorf also the beginning of the 20th century. The German community organized themselves in associations, in the city there was a separate German -language press, including about the communist newspaper Lenin's way.

1938 to 1941 the Germans were driven under Stalin, and the city was renamed in 1938 in Xanlar after a labor leader Azerbaijani Xanlar Safaraliyev. On 25 April 2008, the city was renamed after a nearby lake in Goygol.

From the German occupation of the city remained a Lutheran parish church, which was used in Soviet times as a sports hall and is now a museum, landscaped avenues as streets and gabled houses. There is also a historical museum, a cinema and the bridge Aq Körpü ( White Bridge ), built in the 12th century.

Traffic
