The Graham Farmer Freeway is an urban freeway in downtown Perth in the southeast of the Australian state of Western Australia. It connects the Mitchell Freeway in Leederville with the Orrong Raod in Rivervale, thus forming a northern bypass of downtown Perth.

The Freeway is in conjunction with the Great Eastern Highway and Street Orrong an important link between the city center and the airport. The road is presented together with the Orrong Street when state road 8 (S8 ) and was named after football player Graham "Polly " Farmer ( born 1935 ) named the both the Australian Football League of Western Australia as well as in 1953-1971 played by Victoria.

Northbridge tunnel

During the freeways is the only freeway tunnel of Western Australia, the Northbridge tunnel. The 1.6 km long tunnel has two lanes in each direction and an emergency lane. Between two tunnels there is an escape route. In the population is called the tunnel Polly Pipe, indicating not only the namesake, but also recalls the poly pipes laid underground PE or PVC tubes for Sanitärinstalationen. At both tunnel entrances can be found works of art. At the western entrance there is a pictorially illustrated history of North Bridge and at the eastern entrance of the Aborigineskünstler Ron Cobett has pictures attached that are based on aboriginal art. Transport of dangerous goods must not use the tunnel.

Windan Bridge

The Freeway crosses the Swan River on the 406 m long, six-lane Windan Bridge, one of the newer of the 19 bridges over the river. The bridge also includes walking and biking trails.

Construction

The Graham Farmer Freeway was built in 1996-2000, with more than 180,000 cubic meters of concrete were used. The project was completed three months ahead of schedule and exceeded the calculated budget of AU $ 313 million not. After specification of the operator Main Roads Western Australia the road should keep for 150 years.

Phase 1 consisted of the tunnel and was a finalist in the ' Australian Construction Achievement Award ''.

Phase 2 involved the Windan Bridge and nine other traffic and pedestrian bridges. This construction won a prize of Austroads.
