Gramsh District

The circle Gramsh (Albanian: Rrethi Gram Shit i ) is one of the 36 administrative districts of Albania. The circle with an area of 695 km ² belongs to Qark Elbasan. It has 24,231 inhabitants ( 2011 census ), according to the local authorities even approximately 40,000 inhabitants (2010), about a third of whom live in the city. It was named after the main town circle Gramsh.

The circle Gramsh is secluded in the mountainous southeast of the country. It forms a section of the valley of the river Devoll which traverses it from southeast to northwest. The Devoll is jammed at the end of the valley to a large artificial lake. The dam lies across the border in the district of Elbasan. On the southwest lies the mountain Tomorr, with 2,414 m of the mightiest mountain far and wide. In the east, beyond the landscape at various points 2,000 meters altitude.

As the road through Devoll Valley to Korca is in poor condition and is regularly destroyed, the circle Gramsh is located off the through traffic. All access traffic reaches Gramsh via Elbasan. Several villages in the district are hardly accessible by roads. The whole circle lives almost exclusively on agriculture. Nearly three quarters of the population considers itself to the Bektashi community of faith.
