The Grass River is a right tributary of the St. Lawrence River in St. Lawrence County of the U.S. state of New York.

The Grass River originates in the northern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains at the confluence of its headwaters South Branch and Middle Branch Grass River. It flows predominantly in a northerly direction. After nearly 6 km of North Branch Grass River flows right side into the river. The Grass River flows east past Hermon. He sets her course to the north and flows through the city Canton. The towns of Madrid and Louisville are on its banks. Shortly before reaching the St. Lawrence River, the Grass River turns east. It flows through the city of Massena. There meets the Massena Power Canal, a side channel of the St. Lawrence River, on the left side of the river. Further 10 km on the Grass River flows below the finally located on the St. Lawrence Seaway lock Snell Lock in the St. Lawrence River. The Grass River has a length of 117 km.

Origin of the name

The Grass River was named after the French Admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse ( 1722-1788 ). This supported the American forces in 1781 during the Battle of Yorktown in the American Revolutionary War. Previously, there was also the spelling Grasse River.

Hydropower plants

On the Grass River is located 10 km south of Canton hydropower plant Pyrites ( ⊙ 44.521995-75.188102 ). It has three turbines with a total capacity of 8.2 MW.

Pollution

The 10-km long stretch of the river from the Massena Power Canal to the river mouth is loaded PCB. Polluters are several industries in Massena, including Alcoa.
