Great Bernera

Great Bernera, often known just as Bernera ( Scottish Gaelic in the language Bearnaraigh ), is an island of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It is connected by a bridge to the north-west coast of the island of Lewis and Harris.

The largest settlement on the island is Breaclete, seat of a small museum. Bernera is also known for his settlement from the Iron Age, may have been founded by the Picts. It was discovered in 1992 and now again covered with sand to protect them. A replica of such a house is located near Bostadh. Dun Bharabhat is an Iron Age Broch on the island.

Today, the inhabitants make their money mainly with the catch of lobsters.

The island can be confused with the islands of Berneray and Little Bernera.
