The Great Kei River (or Groot- Keirivier ( Afrikaans ) ) is a river in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province. It is about 320 km long and flows about 60 km east from East London in Keimond in the Indian Ocean. Its catchment area is 20,485 km ².
The river is named for the former homelands Transkei ( " Beyond the Kei " ) and Ciskei ( " this side of the Kei "). The Khoi word Kei means " sand ".
