Great refractor
As Great Refractor several observatories describe their respective largest refracting telescope. These developed before the turn of the century, 10-20 meters long and weighing many tons instruments were known locally as the giant telescopes. The development ended for reasons of stability in 1897 when 1m lens of the Yerkes Observatory; after the era of large reflecting telescopes began.
