Greater Romania Party

The Partidul România Mare ( PRM German about Greater Romania Party ) is a political party in Romania.

History

The Partidul România Mare was founded in June 1991. Dominant personality ( and over long distances also Chairman) was from the beginning Corneliu Vadim Tudor.

In the 1990s, the party initially took a continuous upswing. 1994/95 it had in the meantime even involved in the government of Social Democrats Nicolae Văcăroiu.

In 2000, the Partidul România Mare was the second largest party in the Romanian Parliament. At the same time reached Corneliu Vadim Tudor in the presidential election on the first ballot 28.3 per cent of the vote and second place, but was defeated in the runoff significantly the ex - communist Social Democrats Ion Iliescu with 33.2 to 66.8 percent.

For several months of the year 2005, the party Partidul Popular România Mare was called ( PPRM, about Greater Romania People's Party), then received but again its old name.

Following the accession of Romania to the European Union in January 2007, the Partidul România Mare sent five deputies in the European Parliament. They founded with far-right MEPs from other countries, the Group Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty. These dissolved already in November 2007 on, when the Romanian members left the group due to tensions with their Italian colleagues.

In November 2008, the PRM lost massively in the parliamentary election votes and failed to re- enter parliament. The party retired after the Romanian elections to the European Parliament on 25 November 2007, the Europe-wide representation from. The party is to be classified in the political spectrum of Romania as nationalistic. While it is regarded in Western Europe as a right-wing, it is classified as extreme left in Romania. Reason is the continuity inherited from the Ceauşescu era ideologies of communism and nationalism. Superimposed on this ideology mixture of religious ideas.

According to the party name, the main objective is to restore the borders of Romania in the period between the two world wars ( " Greater Romania " ), that is, including Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina and the Southern Dobruja.

Declared political model of the party and its leader are the dictators Ion Antonescu and Nicolae Ceauşescu.

Regularly certain minorities are declared to be enemies and blamed for abuses in political and social life of Romania. These opponents include Roma, Hungary and homosexuals.

For a long time, Jews were regularly target of verbal attacks the party. In this context leading party representatives also denied the Holocaust or at least the Romanian participation in this. In early 2004 announced publicly his conversion from Tudor anti-Semites for philo and committed an Israeli spin doctors as campaign manager.
