Green Island, Taiwan
Lü Dao, also Lyudao or Green Island (Chinese绿岛/绿岛, Pinyin Lǜ Dǎo, Tongyong Pinyin Lyu Dǎo, W.-G. Lü Tao, PEH oē - jī LEK -tó, Green Island '), also known as the English name Green Iceland, is a good 15 km ² volcanic island southeast of Taiwan. The of the Republic of China as a country community Ludao (绿岛 乡, Lǜdǎo Xiang ) in Taitung County managed island lies about 33 km east of the port city of Taitung in the Pacific. The population is about 3,500 (as of 2013). There are regular flight and ferry services between Taitung and Lü Dao.
History
The island was originally inhabited by indigenous people of the Yanks and was called by this Sanasai. The Chinese called it the fire burned Island (火烧 岛, Huǒshāo Dǎo or火烧 屿, Huoshao Yu ). The present name was Lü Dao her (黄 式 鸿) given on 1 August 1949 by the then Chief Executive of Taitung County, Huang Shih -hung.
Prison island
At the time of lasting until 1987 martial law in the Republic of China Lu Dao was known primarily as a prison island. On the island were numerous political prisoners, but also ordinary criminals imprisoned. Prominent prisoners were later chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party Shih Ming -teh, and the author Bo Yang.
Today the prisons are closed and tourism is the main source of income of the islanders. At the time as a prison island of Human Rights Memorial Park commemorates (绿岛 人权 纪念 园区, English Green Iceland Human Rights Memorial Park ).
Tourism
The coral reefs around Lü Dao are a popular diving area. On the overgrown with tropical vegetation "green island " includes lying directly on the sea in the southeast saltwater hot springs of Zhaori (朝日 温泉) and the rock formations along the east coast of the main attractions. The lighthouse at the northwestern tip was built as a donation from the United States, as thanks for saving the passengers of the 1937 Lü Dao sunken cruise ship President Hoover by the local population.

- Zhongliao (中 寮村)
- Nanliao (南寮 村) consisting of the districts (聚落) Nanliao (南寮) and Yugang (渔港)
- Gongguan (公馆 村) consisting of the districts Gongguan (公馆) Chakou (柴 口), Liumagou (流 麻 沟) Dahu (大湖) and Zuoping (左 坪).
