The Greenwood Lake is a 12 km long lake on the border between the U.S. states of New Jersey and New York. It is located in West Milford ( Passaic County) and Greenwood Lake ( Orange County).

The lake was named by the resident Munsee Indians Quampium and received by the Europeans who came to the area in 1700, the name " Long Pond ". Finally, the lake got its present name Greenwood Lake. In 1837 a dam was built to increase the area of the lake and to improve the efficiency of extraction of water power.

The so enlarged lake began to attract trekkers. Several steamboats operated on the lake, including the run by Greenwood Lake Transportation Company boats " Arlington " and " Milford " and in 1876 built paddle steamer " Montclair ", which had two decks and could take, according to tradition 200 to 400 passengers.

Today, there are at the lake seaplanes, some marinas and waterfront restaurants. The directly south of the lake lying Greenwood Lake Airport has a long enough runway to allow landing of small jet aircraft.
