Greg Page ( born October 25, 1958 in Louisville, Kentucky, † April 27, 2009 ) was an American heavyweight boxer.

Amateur

Even as an amateur sparring Page with the originating also from Louisville Muhammad Ali. He was 1977 and 1978 American heavyweight champion in 1978 and won the national Golden Gloves tournament. His amateur balance was 90 wins in eleven defeats.

Professional career

1979 Greg Page was his professional debut. He showed quick hands, good impact strength, a good chin, but rarely the ambition to make something of his enormous talent.

The world title challenger Alfredo Evangelista and Scott LeDoux 1981 he could defeat kurzrundig prematurely and the veteran Jimmy Young, he proposed in May 1982 on points. Only a month later, he lost then but surprisingly against Trevor Berbick on points.

So you then trust him despite victories against "Quick" Tillis and Renaldo Snipes to only slightly. This assessment also seemed to confirm, because the fight for the vacant WBC world title he lost on 9 March 1984 against Tim Witherspoon.

Now he was classified as beatable and was in demand as a challenger for a supposedly lightweight title defense. So he was offered the opportunity to still another world championship fight. As an outsider he hit on 1 December 1984 in South Africa Gerrie Coetzee by knockout in the eighth round and won the WBA champion title. But already in the first title defense in 1985, he lost the belt to Tony Tubbs.

He then punched until 2001, but was never able to return to previous successes. He lost in this period, including against Joe Bugner, Donovan Ruddock, Francesco Damiani, Bruce Seldon and Monte Barrett.

His last fight he completed on 9 March 2001 against Dale Crowe. His heavy knockout in the tenth round, led to major health problems: He suffered a stroke, a head injury and a permanent left-sided paralysis, in consequence of which he died on 27 April 2009 at the age of 50 years. The Kentucky Athletic Commission sharply criticized in relation to the circumstances of the ring: So was not sufficient medical personnel have been that there was no ambulance stood by and documents would have demonstrated that he was taken away after 45 minutes in a hospital.
