Gregoria

Gregoria (medium Greek Γρηγόρια; * to 612; † after 650) was the wife of the Byzantine emperor Constantine III. and mother Constans ' II

Gregoria was the daughter of Nicetas, a cousin of the Emperor Heraclius and generals. Growing up in the Exarchate of Carthage, she was married to 629/630 in Constantinople Opel with Heraclius ' 17- year-old son and co-emperor Constantine. The couple had at least two sons, Heraclius (later Constans II ) and Theodosius, who was executed by his brother 660. In addition to them a daughter Maria ( Manyanh ) is attributed, the future wife of the last Sassanidenherrschers Yazdegerd III. ( 632-651 )

Emperor Heraclius died on 11 February 641 Constantine III. and Gregoria were to succeed, but the rule had to share with Heraklonas and its generally hateful mother Martina. Constantine died only three months later of tuberculosis, Heraklonas and Martina end of September were overthrown. What remained was the eleven-year Constans as sole ruler.

Gregorias political role under the reign of Constans II's is not mentioned in the Byzantine sources. However, it is very likely that she has passed the regent for her minor son to about 650, while supported by a senator College under the leadership of Patriarch Paulos II, however temporarily displaced in the years 642 and 643 of ambitious generals Valentinos. Maybe it was the deterrent example Megan, it was Gregoria seem advisable not to step too openly in evidence in the government affairs.
