Gregory Herbert

Gregory Delano " Greg" Herbert ( born May 19, 1947 in Philadelphia, † January 31, 1978 in Amsterdam) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone, clarinet, flute ).

Life and work

Herbert began playing alto saxophone at age twelve. In 1964 he briefly played in the Duke Ellington Orchestra before studying 1965-1971 Music at Temple University. 1968 made ​​recordings with Pat Martino ( Baiyina ). Herbert eventually abandoned his studies to play with Woody Herman and His Orchestra, with which he in 1974 at the Montreux Jazz Festival guested. In 1975, he was particularly hergehoben at a recording session of Harold Danko Quartet as a soloist. From 1975 to 1977 he was a member of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra. He also worked with Chuck Israels ' National Jazz Ensemble, Johnny Coles and Chet Baker.

Herbert, who died in 1978 in Amsterdam while touring with Blood, Sweat & Tears on drug abuse, worked 1964-1977 with 31 recording sessions.
