Gretna is a city in the U.S. state of Louisiana and the administrative seat of Jefferson Parish. Gretna is on the west bank of the Mississippi River and is part of the metropolitan New Orleans, which lies on the opposite bank.

After the establishment in the 19th century, the city grew mainly by a ferry service to New Orleans, connecting major rail lines with the east bank. Gretna gained national notoriety in connection with Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when police forces refugees from New Orleans at gunpoint because prevented from entering the city Gretnas.
