Grey-tailed Tattler

Graytail Sandpipers ( Heteroscelus brevipes )

The gray tail Sandpipers ( Heteroscelus brevipes ), also known as East Siberian migrant sandpipers or Graubürzel - Sandpiper, is a monotypic species of the family of Waders. The IUCN classifies the gray tail water striders as a uncritical ( least concern ).

Appearance

The gray water tail rotor reaches a body length of 24-27 centimeters. The wingspan is 50 to 65 centimeters. The weight varies 85-115 grams.

In breeding plumage the upper head, neck, tail and wing coverts of the tail gray water strider are pale slate gray. The springs have some white lace, which the body top is a slightly mottled pattern. A conspicuous white eyes slipping over runs from the forehead to the back of the head. A second, darker stripe runs from below the beak base over his eyes. The dark eyes are surrounded by a very thin white eye-ring, which is especially noticeable through the dark eye stripe. The cheeks, the front neck and the forechest well as the sides of the chest have a fine gray dashes. The belly is white. In Plain dress the similarity to the Nearctic migrant sandpiper is very pronounced, the gray water tail rotor is then dyed but overall pale gray. Young birds resemble the adult birds in simplicity dress. The Dunenküken are whitish on the body top and gray on the underparts.

Dissemination

The gray tail Redshank occurs only in the Palaearctic and has a patchy distribution area. It breeds on the northern course of the river Yenisei and patchy in the area between the Lena River to the west of the Chukotka and Kamchatka. Its habitat is the shores of rivers with a rocky riverbed in mountain regions.

The gray water tail rotor is a migratory bird that winters in coastal areas in Indonesia and Australasia during the winter months. However, a few birds of this species remain in the winter in the area of hot springs on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

Way of life

The gray tail sandpiper eats invertebrates. He picked especially insect larvae from the water surface or the bottom of the riparian zone. During the winter months the gray tail water striders live in groups, while more solitary lives in his breeding area. He enters into a monogamous couple relationship, but overall is until now the breeding biology of this species is not well researched.

The nest is built on the banks of fast-flowing rivers. But similar to the migrant sandpipers the sandpipers Graytail also uses abandoned tree nests of other birds. The nest consists usually of four eggs. These have a pale blue shell color and black speckled. The incubation period is probably 23 days. Both parents are involved in the breeding birds. The chicks are precocial, which are guided by both parents birds. You are probably fledge after 20 days.
