Grillenburg Sandstone

The BBQ Burger sandstone and also the low Schönaer sandstone and sandstone Hetzdorfer among the Elbsandsteinen.

There were formerly a number of sand quarries in Tharandter forest in Grillenburg, Niederschöna and Hetzdorf, and his close environment, so far from Höckendorf (Paul Heide ) and Ruppendorf. These Cretaceous sandstones originated in the Cenomanian. The above quarries have been closed for some time.

Rock Description and Use

This sandstone is fine - and coarse-grained, its color is white to brown; besides quartz and mica are also numerous plant imprints of Credneria triacuminata to find.

The material for the Golden Gate ( 1230 ) of the Freiberg Cathedral and other important buildings came to sedimentological investigations and historical research from the stone bench in the environment of Grillenburg, which was used until the early 20th century still for the manufacture of millstones. The coat of arms of Kursächsische distance column in Johanngeorgenstadt and further distance columns in the Ore Mountains were made of low Schönaer sandstone and the three Freiberger Post distance columns from Hetzdorfer sandstone.
