Grimmia

Grimmia pulvinata

Grimmia is a genus of mosses of the family Grimmiaceae.

Features

The 5-40 (70 ) mm tall plants form loose grass to dense cushions. The leaves are oblong - ovate to lanceolate, often tongue-shaped, concave or keeled, have a well-trained reaching up to the blade tip midrib, further flat, inwardly curved or recurved leaf margins and often a glass top. The lamina is einzellschichtig to mehrzellschichtig. Leaf cells at the leaf base shorter or longer rectangular, but never barbed -like thickened as in Racomitrium species. The cells in the center of the page are roundish - square and usually thick-walled.

The species are dioecious or autoecious ( antheridia and archegonia at different branches on the same plant ). Propagules are formed at a part of the species. The short to long Seta is erect or bent, the spore capsule erect to pendulous, the calyptra hats or hat -shaped. The columella ( central column in the spore capsule ) remains in the capsule, and is not connected to the capsule cap.

Dissemination

The genus Grimmia is widespread on all continents. Most species prefer dry and temperate to cold climates and are rock dwellers.
