The name means Grønland as at the North American island of Greenland, grassland and is derived from the grassy banks of the Oslo region. The same main road Grønland and Grønlandsleiret mark the old shoreline and is considered the historic northern border to the city district Bjørvika. Since Grønland recorded a large increase over the centuries, the boundaries of the adjacent Bjørvika have changed in favor of Grønland.

There was also formerly an important connection between the then suburb Grønland and the Norwegian capital Christiania (Oslo ) and led over the Fatherland bro ( Fatherland Bridge ) (the first bridge dates from the year 1654). Many remarkable buildings of Greenland, as the local church, the Grønland kirke, the school and the fire station as well as the distributors near state prison Botsfengselet were all built in the 1860s.

Similarly, the local meat and vegetable market was held there. In the period from 1970 up to the 1980s was located on the square, a central bus station. In 1988, in its place a new building with a central bus terminal ( Oslo Bussterminal ) and the Galleri Oslo ( Oslo gallery ), built a shopping center, opened in 1989. The complex Smalgangen was on the square also in the same year built, which was developed as a new residential and shopping center of the architects Anchor & Hølaas AS. The area in which there is also the headquarters of the Oslo police, is already affected by a significant gentrification, which radiates in particular the neighboring Bjørvika and there newly built Oslo Opera House.
