Gröningen Priory

Kloster Groningen was a Benedictine monastery on the territory of modern city Groningen in Saxony-Anhalt. It was founded in 936 by the monastery of Corvey and lasted until its dissolution, 1550. Today the monastery is located on the Romantic Road.

Kloster Groningen is also the name of the hamlet of Groningen, which has emerged from the monastery.

Monastery Church of St. Vitus

The monastery church of St. Vitus, lying on a slight hill, was consecrated by Abbot 940 Volkmar I. of Corvey and rebuilt in 1200 for a three-nave Romanesque basilica in flat slabs Hirsauer style. Especially is the rare octagonal lantern tower and a gallery, which was decorated with figural reliefs in stucco technique. You can see a copy of the relief. The copy in the monastery church Groninger was worked up by residual findings original color.

The original of the last remaining large-scale sculpture in Germany from the years around 1170 is located in the Bode Museum in Berlin. In addition to the rise of relief also a Romanesque baptismal font, some paintings at the barrel vault of the chapel, an angel and a relief Rankentympanonrelief from the 13th century have been preserved.
