The Great Tide Pool (also High Tide Pool, Greatest Mountain ) with a height of 2515 m above sea level. A. the highest mountain of the Dead Mountains in Upper Austria Traun district and is among the 25 most prominent mountain in the Alps. It forms the north-eastern cornerstone of the vast karst plateau of the Dead Mountains and falls on all sides into steep walls of Dachstein Limestone. Name

The name Priel is the first time in 1584 " genent the Hochgepürg the Pruell " in the land register of the rule Scharstein with the words mentioned. The name " Tide " was interpreted initially by Konrad Schiffmann Slavic origin and attributed to prědělъ ( watershed boundary). This interpretation is rejected by Karl Finsterwalder, including name because as far remote peaks typically do not reach back to such an old language layers. Finsterwalder derives the name of the German word " Tide " (water collection, water point ), where the name is moved from the mountain pastures up to the summit. Location and construction

The Great Tide Pool rises on the municipalities of Grünau ( Gmunden ) and Hinterstoder ( district of Kirchdorf an der Krems ). The base of the mountain is composed of weather stone dolomite. Touristic development

The first mention of climbing the Great Priels of Archduke Johann in his travel diaries in the context of a multi-day hike on the high plateau of the Dead Mountains 1810:

"From the valley snow on bare rock can be ob der Enns takes 2 hours without danger to the summit of the high -Priel in the country; Wildschützen boarded him already. It is the highest of the whole area; ... "

The first documented tourist ascent succeeded on August 29, 1817 Franz Sigmund Graf from Englewood to Wagrain and Seisenburg guided by the hunter Hans, Anton, Engelbert and Ferdinand Riedler. They were followed on August 14, 1819, Archduke Louis of Austria in great company.

In 1870 the initiative was built by Innerstoder priest Dominik Kastner and Camillo Starhemberg an eight-meter high, 2240 kg heavy, highly visible summit cross of iron. The transition from the Pühringerhütte also leads over the meat Bank saddle.
