Großes Moor (lake)

The lake Great Moor is located about 0.8 kilometers south of the High field in the district of Rostock.

Location

The lake is surrounded by meadows and pastures on the territory of the municipality of the same name. The lake has a north- south length of about 150 meters and an east-west extent of about 220 meters. Just south of there is a small pond, the Aalkiste that is connected to the Großenmoor a 70- meter long trench. Around the lake there are several small ponds and water holes.

Origins of the lake

As of 1815, the mining of peat began in the area of ​​the lake today for fuel use. The peat bog was drained by means of a lift pump. 1873 increased the mass of the water, the capacity of the pump, so that the degradation area was flooded and the present lake was created. The peat was continued in the marginal areas of the lake until at least 1886.
