Großhöflein is a market town with 1998 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Burgenland in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung in Austria. The Hungarian name of the village is Nagyhöflány.

Geography

The municipality is located in the northern Burgenland close to Eisenstadt, capital of the southern town of the Leitha Mountains. Großhöflein is the only place in the community.

History

Before Christ's birth, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area of the Celtic hillfort castle on the Schwarzenbacher Castle Hill.

Later, under the Romans today Großhöflein then lay in the province of Pannonia.

On the Föllig (286 meters) finds from the Neolithic, Bronze Age and the time of the Roman empire were made. Market town is Großhöflein since 1701. The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( Sopron County ). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Nagyhöflány.

After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).

The current distribution of seats (21 seats) in the municipal council is LBL 8, 7 SPÖ and ÖVP 6 mandates.

Culture and sights

The late-Gothic parish church was rebuilt in the 17th century, received in 1992 a side aisle and was renovated in 2006. Other religious buildings in Großhöflein are the Antoni Chapel ( built in 1730 ) and the Radegundiskapelle. The town hall, known as the Simon- despot - house, was built in 1675. Also from the 17th century comes the Pleininger house. A pillory is dated to the year 1714. To decay are built in the 18th century hunting lodge and summer house of the Esterházy family.

Economy and infrastructure

Großhöflein is a wine-growing town in the wine region Neusiedl Hill Country. Because of its location on the southern slopes of the Leitha Mountains and through a throng of lime soils mature wines here that count with regularity the best in Austria. Became internationally known Großhöflein by the success of Anton Kollwentz (* 1940). The existing near the village sulfur source is not used.
