Gruene, New Braunfels, Texas
Gruene Historic District is a for -proclaimed district of New Braunfels. The village was founded by the sons of the German settlers Ernst and Antoinette Gruene. In the 19th century there was in Gruene a bank, a post office, a school, a dance hall for the local workforce, a grist mill and a cotton gin. Two rail lines facilitated the loading of cotton.
Built in 1878 by Henry D. Gruene Dance Hall Gruene Hall is, according to the owner to this day, in continuous operation, and it is denoted as the " oldest operating dance hall in Texas ." Performances by Willie Nelson, George Strait, Townes Van Zandt, Jerry Jeff Walker, Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, Greg Allman and many others made the legendary Gruene Hall. In 1996, she was the scene in the movie Michael with John Travolta.
