Grupo Especial de Operaciones

The Grupo Especial de Operaciones (GEO ) is the special unit of the Spanish police for counter-terrorism and hostage rescue. She is stationed in Guadalajara.

Order

The unit is specialized to deal with terrorist threats adequately with police methods. They are specially trained for hostage situations. Often it is also used in the fight against organized crime and in personal security for special dignitaries.

Organization

GEO is divided into the Relief Train and Unterstützungszug. The Relief Train is divided into three working groups, sub-groups for training and special operations as well as technology and research. Each of these groups consists of two teams each consisting of two snipers, a technician, a diver and an expert for special systems.

History

GEO was established in 1978 to combat terrorism and organized crime, with the support of the German GSG -9. 1979 GEO was presented to the Spanish press.
