GS1

GS1 (Global Standards One ) is a worldwide organization providing global standards designed to improve supply chains and implement and is responsible for awarding the Global Trade Item Number ( GTIN ) worldwide.

The award system of the GTIN based on the fact that GS1 is registered as Issuing Agency (IAC ) according to International Standard ISO / IEC 15459-2 with the ISO Registration Authority. Based on this unique series and item numbers can be generated in the GS1 System. Parallel to GS1, there are other Issuing Agencies other industrial areas (eg Odette International for automobile, EDIFICE for electronics, HIBC for health and about 20 others).

GS1 is funded by the paid assignment of unique numbers for the various manufacturers of products that participate in the GS1 system. In retail, the GS1 system is dominant. In other industries, the GS1 system is not used, because it does not fit to these applications.

Criticism

GS1 is a so-called " non-profit " organization. It should, therefore, an advice and support of users take place that is not profit -oriented. In fact, GS1 operates but a partial aggressive marketing its own solutions and services. One example is www.prozeus.de. This site is operated by GS1 Germany ( and the EHI ). The content appears at first glance to be a neutral information for SME's. At a closer look, but notice that there are mainly GS1 solutions provided. Would be correct advice on the neutral basis of ISO standards (ISO / IEC 15459 all parts, ISO 28219, ISO 22742, ISO 15394 ) or a very clear statement that GS1 as a service provider offering its solutions there (and so implicitly by konkurrienden organizations ). Interesting is the statement of the DIN:

  • NDWK is dissolved. DIN committee NIA takes over the task areas of the Standards Committee data and goods in the consumer goods industry ( NDWK ). German Institute for Standardization, November 4, 2011, accessed on 8 January 2014.
