Guacanagaríx

Guacanagari († 1494) was one of five indigenous kings of Hispaniola. He received Christopher Columbus in 1492, after his ship, which was, on Christmas Day 1492 Santa Maria ran aground off the island.

When Columbus left the island, attacked neighboring caciques to the Spanish settlement of La Navidad. The Spaniards were murdered and burned La Navidad and the city of King Guacanagari.

Guacanagari refused to cooperate with the other caciques who tried to expel the Spaniards from the island. He fled into the mountainous hinterland of Hispaniola, where he died in 1494.
