Guarapiranga

The Guarapiranga Reservoir ( Guarapiranga ) is a dam in the south of the metropolitan region of São Paulo, state of São Paulo in Brazil.

In 1908 the dam was inaugurated for the purpose of electricity generation. Today, however, he primarily serves as a water reservoir for a large portion of the approximately 20 million inhabitants of the metropolitan area. Another reason for the establishment of the dam was the flood control of the Rio Guarapiranga and the Pinheiros River. The lake is fed by the Rio Guarapiranga and other smaller rivers that da Serra and Embu - Guaçu have their origin in the urban areas of São Paulo, Itapecerica.

On the shore of the lake there are numerous artificial beaches and marinas, making the Guarapiranga Reservoir is also of importance for tourism.
