Guarneri

Guarneri is a traditional Cremonese violin peasant family of the 17th and 18th centuries. Andrea Guarneri (ca. 1623/26-1698 ) was a pupil and assistant of Nicola Amati. Andreas son Pietro ( I) ( 1655-1720 ) was also a violin maker and worked mainly in Mantua.

Andreas son of Giuseppe Giovanni (1666 -ca. 1739/40 ), who later became the nickname filius Andreae received, continued his father's work.

His sons Pietro ( II) ( 1695 -ca. 1762/63 ), which was mainly active in Venice, and ( Bartolomeo ) Giuseppe Antonio, named Joseph Guarnerius del Gesù ( 1698-1744 ), was also a violin maker. The instruments of Joseph Guarnerius Del gesus include not only those of Antonio Stradivari of the most coveted and most expensive instruments.

The String Quartet Guarneri String Quartet, founded in 1964 is named after the luthier family.
