Guerino Mazzola

Guerino Mazzola ( born February 2, 1947 in Uster) is a Swiss mathematician, musicologist, jazz pianist and author.

Life

Mazzola studied from 1966 to 1971 at the University of Zurich mathematics, crystallography and theoretical physics. He received his doctorate in mathematics in 1971 at Bartel Leendert van der Waerden, was then a post-doc in Paris and Rome and in 1980 qualified as a professor in algebraic geometry and representation theory. In 2000, he was honored with the medal of the Mexican Mathematics Society. In addition, he completed his habilitation in 2003 in Scientific Computing, also at the University of Zurich, having previously been eg Composer software was developed ( Presto). Currently, Mazzola professor at the School of Music at the University of Minnesota. He was among others also a visiting professor at the École normale supérieure.

Mazzola had as a child classical piano lessons and attended from 1961 to 1964, the (first, only with short-term ) Jazz School in Zurich. From the 1970s, he also appeared as a jazz pianist. He has recorded several CDs with free jazz musicians like Mat Maneri, Heinz Geisser, Sirone, Jeff Kaiser, Scott Fields, Matt Turner and Rob Brown.

In his classic work, The Topos of Music Mazzola uses complex mathematical concepts such as the concept of topos theory to musicology. His remarks are controversial among mathematicians and musicologists. His book geometry of the tones gives an introduction to the mathematical theory of music.
