Gueugnon

Gueugnon is a town in Burgundy, France, in the department of Saône -et -Loire. It has 7386 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

The city is crossed by the river Arroux, a right tributary of the Loire.

History

At the end of the 19th century, the river water was diverted Arroux at Gueugnon and a 14 -kilometer-long supply channel ( trench de l' Arroux ) east of the city Digoin into the Canal du Centre conducted to improve the water supply of the channel. The trench de l' Arroux was then navigable for small vessels. In the 1950s, the port in Gueugnon was closed and the shipping set to this supply channel.

Twinning

Gueugnon is the sister city of Otter mountain in Rhineland- Palatinate.

Sports

The city for its football club FC Gueugnon, who played several years in the first two leagues and was already represented in the UEFA Cup is known. On July 9, 2010 Gueugnon was the destination of the sixth stage of the Tour de France 2010.
