Inflorescence and leaves of Guiera senegalensis

Guiera senegalensis is the only species of the genus Guiera within the family of wing seed plants ( Combretaceae ). It grows in the Sahel and Sudan zone from Senegal to the Central African Republic.

Description

Guiera senegalensis grows as a shrub, reaching heights of growth of about 1 to 2 meters. The against-constant leaves are short-stalked and the blue-green, ovate to elliptic leaf blade is covered with numerous black glandular dots.

The cream- white to yellowish flowers are in with a diameter of up to 15 mm spherical inflorescences. The approximately 3 to 4.5 cm long fruits are densely covered by silky, pink - gray hair.

Use

The wood is used as firewood, young twigs as tooth cleaning stick. Leaves, fruits and roots are used for human and veterinary medicine.
