Guillermo Endara

Guillermo Endara Galimany ( born May 12, 1936 in Panama City, † September 28, 2009 ibid ) was a lawyer, politician, and December 20, 1989 to September 1, 1994 President of Panama.

Life

Guillermo Endara studied medicine at the University of Tulane and accounting at Seale Business College in New Orleans.

May 1989 he was a candidate of the alliance of opposition political parties ( ADOC ) with 62.5 % elected President of Panama. His opponent of the Revolutionary Democratic Party (PRD ), Manuel Noriega, who had by this time ruled by dictatorial powers over the country and built up a drug cartel, reached 24.9 % of the vote, but did not want to acknowledge his defeat. This may have been the trigger for the U.S. invasion (Operation Just Cause ) in Panama in December 1989. Endara was officially used on 20 December 1989 as President of the Republic of Panama. During his reign he put the public restored order and could significantly improve the economic situation of Panama. While gross domestic product in 1990 decreased by 7.5 %, it increased in 1992 by 8%.

In 1994, Ernesto Pérez Balladares the Office of the President.

1990 Endara was one of the founders of the Partido Paulista Arnulf, whose name goes back to the former President Arnulfo Arias. Later, however, he distanced himself from the party and joined the party Solidaridad (Solidarity ) in the case for which he was a candidate in the 2004 election campaign as president. He was defeated, however, Martin Torrijos of the Revolutionary Democratic Party ( PRD) and received only 27% of the vote.

Endara died on 28 September 2009, a result of a heart attack.
