Guinea baboon (Papio papio )

The Guinea baboon (Papio papio ), also known as Sphinx or Red baboon is a primate of the species of baboons in the family Cercopithecidae ( Cercopithecidae ).

Features

Guinea baboons are the smallest baboon. They have a reddish- brown fur and a hairless, dark violet or black face with the typical elongated snout Pavia. The males wear on her head and shoulders like a mane of hair.

Distribution and habitat

Guinea Baboons inhabit a small area in western Africa. Its distribution area covers Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, southern Mauritania and western Mali. Their habitat is savannas and light forests.

Way of life

About the lifestyle of Guinea baboons is compared with other types of Pavia little known. They are diurnal and often stay on the ground, climbing for the night but mostly on trees. The existence of suitable calm trees limits the group size and the distribution area. They should live in harem groups ( groups with only one male ), who sometimes join together to form larger groups. Presumably, the group behavior is partly variable.

Like all baboons are omnivorous, take the fruits, buds, roots, insects and small mammals to himself.
